Having lived in other countries in the past, one thing I know is that you adapt. You obey their rules and you (learn to) speak their language. If you didn’t like it you didn’t have to live there. In the United States we celebrate Christmas. However, somewhere along the way someone decided that saying Merry Christmas would offend others who live in this country and do not call their celebration Christmas. Come on now, don’t you think that is just a bit too sensitive. I like saying Merry Christmas and sending Christmas cards, and after a lifetime of saying Merry Christmas, saying Happy Holidays just doesn’t feel right.
Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Drama and venom fill the void broken dreams create. I have never had anyone scold me for wishing them a Merry Christmas. This is a created issue by conservatives with an Christian supremacist agenda and a hand full of insecure atheists with an axe to grind. These people love their prejudices more than they love what America stands for. Quick grab your guns we have to protect Jesus from Santa Claus and the Wicans and the Jews and the Muslims and the Hindus et cetera et cetera. Exactly why can’t we as individuals celebrate this time of the year as we choose without condemning those who do it in their own way?
J: I once worked in an office where a non-Christian co-worker of mine did have a problem with the office having a “Christmas” party. We had planned the office “Christmas” party and then he said he was not going to attend just because it was a “Christmas” party. So we said okay, it’s a “Holiday” party. He still refused to attend. So the next year we began our party planning process by saying we are having a “Holiday” party. Since we started out by saying it was a “Holiday” party he was okay with it and he attended the party. There was another time where an agency event was rescheduled to a day that just happened to fall on another religious (non-Christian) group’s holiday. One man was so upset that he sent me a very nasty e-mail telling me how insensitive it was for the event to be scheduled on this particular day. I wasn’t even the one who rescheduled the event, I was just the messenger.
What a great blog! I’m glad I stumbled upon it! Merry Christmas!
Professgretch: So glad you stopped by. Thank you for the kind words. I hope you had an enjoyable Christmas with your loved ones. A.
Do you think we, as humans, are afraid of each other’s differences? Wouldn’t the world be a much nicer place if we could all respect one another’s differences and try to live in harmony? I suppose that is the age old dilemma and will continue to be. There will always be differences, even amongst people on “the same team”. Whatever your beliefs, I wish you all happiness.
I think people these days are just too keen on being “politically correct” or “religion free” as if it’s poison. I like saying Merry Christmas. It’s really the reason why we have the holidays. I don’t see why people should be offended by that just because they’re not Christians or they don’t celebrate Christmas.
